In addition to the “On This Day in San Francisco” feature I also want to use this blog to celebrate the lives and achievements of prominent, and perhaps some less well known but no less extraordinary, San Francisco characters. Whilst names like Emperor Norton, Adolph Sutro, Harvey Milk, Jerry Garcia and Willie Mays might spring immediately to mind I want to focus on others whose contribution to the city’s colourful history has been equally as remarkable. I’m even open to offers as to suggestions who might be covered!
Again, I intend to introduce my first character in the coming days.
Hiya Man,
Been to Frisco 3 times .Gotta be fav US city visited and probably up there as one of the top towns in the world for me.
Being on the road you have to mention Jack Kerouac. All roads in Frisco should lead to his bar.
Do you remember what course I went on when I left the Social?
Ian
Hi Ian,
You are referring to Vesuvio’s bar on Jack Kerouac Alley off Columbus Avenue in North Beach. That is our favourite bar and we spend many hours drinking there on our trips. We try to get the table upstairs that has the huge framed photo of Jame Joyce behind it – I love knockin’ back the Sierra Nevada beers and large straight Jack Daniel’s in his shadow?
I’m sorry I don’t recall the course but I presume it is relevant to the subject in hand?
If you want to read more why don’t you subscribe to my blog – just enter your e mail address on the home page.
regards
Tony
Thanks Tony,
Only went to the Vesuvio’s bar once ,hut yer loved it.
All those years ago left Cargreen Rd to do a 9month course in Travel and Tourism sponsored by British Airways.Never got any decent jobs in the trade. Ironically,it was my wife who ended up getting a job with an airline (Delta) using her language skills.
Being a father of a more advancing number years and civil servant still of sorts ,I will apologise if my dipping in to your blogland is only of an occasional nature.
Probably forget the topic last conversed.
Ian
Ian, you’ll be welcome whenever you’re able to drop by!
